Chimneys
The Importance of Chimney Upkeep
Whether your home is classic, modern, rustic, or eclectic, everyone enjoys a fireplace’s beauty and warmth.
However, while everyone admires a fireplace, the chimney itself is a feature that often gets neglected.
Over time, exposure to the elements and wear & tear can cause damage to your chimney.
When fluctuations in temperature occur, it can result in damage to chimney masonry, plywood, sheetrock, paint, and the roof itself.
The materials can crack, break, and even disintegrate, especially if they are not properly maintained.

Common Types of Chimney Damage
Chimney damage can result in water damage, unwanted pests inside the home, and safety issues with lighting your fireplace. Here are a few signs that you may have a problem:
- Cracks or Gaps in the Chimney Masonry. If you notice cracks or gaps in the masonry on your chimney, it could be a sign that the chimney is in need of repair. These openings can allow water to seep into the chimney, which can cause further damage, not only to the chimney but to the inside of your home as well.
- Damaged Chimney Crown. The chimney crown is the top part of the chimney that covers the chimney flue. If the crown is damaged or cracked, water can seep into the chimney and cause further damage.
- Leaking Water or Moisture. If you notice water or moisture inside your home near the chimney, it could be a sign that the chimney is leaking. This could be caused by a damaged chimney cap, cracked masonry, or other issues. Another sign of leaking and water issues is white discoloration (efflorescence) on the chimney external masonry.
- Loose Or Missing Bricks or Stones. Unfortunately, this is very common. If you notice loose or missing bricks or stones on your chimney, it could be a sign that the chimney is in need of repair. This could be caused by exposure to the elements. It is very important to get this looked at as soon as possible as it could be a safety hazard.
Fortunately, regular chimney maintenance and repair can keep the structure in good health, which pays for itself in preventing damage.
